“霸”字趣谈

人们印象中的“霸”字以贬义为主，如“霸道/霸气”（overbearing; high-handed; domineering; unreasonable; rude and belligerent）、“霸王”（overlord; despot）、“霸占/霸持”（forcibly occupy; seize; usurp）等。现在常说的“霸王条款”（unfair clause; arbitrary stipulation）就是指商家等单方面制定的强制性（mandatory）、不平等的规定。不少地方有“当地一霸”（local despot），谁也惹不起。有的村里有“村霸”（village despot），关进监狱的犯人也常受“狱霸”（prison despot）的欺负。有一段时间人们对垄断行业的“电霸”（electricity tyrant）、“水霸”（water tyrant）等敢怒不敢言（feel angry but not dare to speak out）。现代常说的“霸权主义”（hegemonism）指国际上以实力操纵或控制别国的行为（dominant influence or authority of one nation over another through power）是我们一贯反对的，我国几代领导人都一再强调中国永远不称霸（never seek hegemony）。

近来“霸”字又火了起来（become thriving），球场上的“球霸”（domineering player），学校里的“校霸”（school bully，尤指美国中学高年级显得很霸道—very aggressive的学生）。有意思的是，麦当劳快餐厅的一种巨型三明治被称为“巨无霸”（Big Mac），一款特大的音乐碟被称为“歌霸”（super-disc）。不久前又出现了一些新的“霸”，在大学生中尤其流行：“学霸”：本来指某个学术领域把持学术话语的人，带有贬义，现在指学习劲头十足，成绩优异的学生（网上有不同的译法，如super scholar, king of study等，学生们自己译为study bug）。 “考霸”：（bully examinee; exam bug）多次参加招聘考试，而成绩也不错的人。“面霸”：（bully interviewee; interview bug）多次参加招聘面试，最终找到理想工作的人。

句子：在这个超市可以买到各种各样的强化食品。

误译：Various kinds of condensed food are available in this supermarket.

正译：Various kinds of fortified food are available in this supermarket.

解释：to condense 的意思是to become thicker because the water is removed，即“去掉水分而变稠”，相当于“浓缩”。condensed food指的是“浓缩食品”。强化食品是添加维生素、矿物质或蛋白质，使营养得到增强的食品。英语的 to fortify 或to enrich 的意思是to increase the strength or quality of food by adding sth to it，具有“使食品营养增强”的意思。“强化食品”应该译为 fortified/enriched food。

“强化”的第一个意思是“使坚实牢固”。英语译为to consolidate。例如：1. 这种新施工技术有助于强化水泥基地面。This new construction technique helps to consolidate the cement-based flooring.

“强化”的第二个意思是“使坚强有力”。英语译为to strengthen, to reinforce。例如：2. 这家银行已强化了对金融机构整体风险的监督机制。The bank has strengthened its oversight mechanism for the overall risk of financial institutions.

“强化”的第三个意思是“使紧张激烈”。英语译为 to intensify。例如：3. 这位专家正在给大学生讲如何强化记忆。The expert is talking to the college students about how to intensify their memory.

“强化”的第四个意思是“提高”。英语可以译为 to heighten, to enhance。例如：4. 在科学研究中，我们应该强化创新意识。In scientific research, we should enhance our sense of innovation. “强化”的第五个意思是“使更有功效”。英语译为 to fortify, to enrich。例如：5. 这种面包因添加维生素而得到强化。This kind of bread is fortified with vitamins.
