乐山市中区位于峨眉山麓，古称嘉州，是乐山市的中心区和成都经济区核心圈重要的二级枢纽，幅员825平方公里，常住人口80万，岷江、大渡河、青衣江在这里交汇，世界自然和文化遗产乐山大佛坐立于此。区境内现有5A级景区1个，4A级景区2个。区委、区政府确立了“依市兴区、率先发展，‘两化\’互动、实现跨越”的发展战略，围绕“构建综合实力高地、打造四川三宜城市”目标，将建“低碳经济先行区、现代商贸物流区、统筹城乡示范区、休闲旅游度假区”。

乐山市中区距成都120公里，成绵乐城际铁路建成后30分钟可达成都。正在实施的以“两航、五铁、十高速”为重点的“千亿交通工程”线路均在区境内交汇，将形成通达各区县的“半小时核心圈”，2小时可通达重庆市和周边市州，4小时通达其他省会城市。随着境内“成都港”开建，市中区将成为成都经济区内唯一集港口、航空、铁路、公路为一体的交通枢纽。
